Real-life Quest Log

Introduction

Have you ever thought that almost the same things you do in games in real-life sometimes cause the feeling of pain and despair? The idea of this journal is to make the real-life tasks into something like ingame tasks. Completing tasks, even the smallest ones, would make you feel better. Especially if you have depression or anxiety. If you can track your activity, estimate the experience you gained from the tasks and receive a little reward for what you’re doing, would it make your life a little better?

So, this is a Real-life quest journal! Go ahead and kick your boss’s ass (I mean, not literally)! This journal is like an enhanced planner: you put the goal in the journal, schedule the completion and put a little reward for finishing. You can also estimate how useful the task was for your personal development, i.e. gaining ‘Experience points’.

The information on your “quest” aka tasks consists of:

Date received. The date the quest was received. Well, it is self-evident, but is needed for tracking purposes.

Questgiver. The person who gave you the quest. It can be you or any other person or organization.

Quest. The description of what you are to do.

Time to complete. The deadline. The time you have to complete the quest.

Progress. Here you can tick the figure if you have completed some part of the quest which, for example, you want to do daily.

Experience. Your estimation of how much you would become more skillful or knowledgeable if you complete the quest.

Reward. Allow yourself a little (or generous!) reward for completing the quest! Something that canstimulate you on your way to a better life.

Comments. Here you can make any comments before completing the quest or after. For exam- ple, the jobwas much harder, but you learned much more that you expected and thus received additional experience points.

And at the end of the month you can summarize everything you’ve achieved this month.

Ah, yes, before you start you need to create your character’s list!

Let’s use some cliches RPGs use. Why? Sometimes a simple look from the side can show where

one needs to go or work on. So, you can give it a try. Rate each characteristic from one to ten.

There are 6 primary parameters every person has:

Strength - your physical strength. How strong are you? Can you lift a 300 kg barbell? If so, it is definitely 10!

Dexterity - the parameter shows how quick you are.

Charisma - this parameter shows how charming you are. Rate 10 if everyone you meet loves you and 1 if they instantly hate you.

Intelligence - have you read a lot of books? Intelligence is the amount of knowledge you have.

Wisdom - is the ability to apply the knowledge in practice. Do you know several lan- guages you can use? Can you solve the most difficult puzzles? Can you apply your school knowledge in everyday life?

Stamina - This is the ability to withstand stress, to be physically durable, to go for a very long walk or trip etc.

Every parameter can be changed in time by completing your real-life quests! You don’t have enough Charisma? Change clothes, use cosmetics, go to fitness, take speech classes etc. and you will notice your Charisma has increased!

Write down your ‘class’ - your current occupation. Yes, that would be (and should) be very funny! You might ask ‘why do I have Office clerk class’? And that is exactly why you should put it down. You need to compare your ‘parameters’ with your ‘class’ and your dreams! Do they fit together? If not, you have your first quest - to change your ‘class’. Of course, if the skills you have are enough for that. If not, well, you know now what to do.

Skills - write down everything you can do. Anything. Trust me, that can help you to understand yourself a lot! Like, for example, you hate your work and want to quit it. You want to go freelancing. What do you like to do? What are you capable of? Are you good at math? Are you a good writer? You need to spend some time putting literally everything on a piece of paper. Remember, when you do this you can see all the possibilities you have. And you can start working out your way to your dream.

And the last thing is ‘bosses’. Your very ultimate and long-reaching goals! I put several pages with them. The pages with bosses have the name of this ultimate goal - ‘boss’, the names of quests you need to fulfill to ‘finish it’, parameters you need to reach, resources to spend etc. For example, ‘To become rich’ goal. You can write down and track quests you need to finish to reach it, the parameters you need to have for this in

your chosen way etc. And of course, they are not the easy one for sure.

So, let’s start leveling up your real-life character! And I hope you will like this real-life journey!
